Halcomb-Whitaker-Boggs Memorial Scholarship

Availability: $1,000 per semester

The HWB Scholarship is for high school students in Jackson County planning to attend an accredited university and major in agriculture- and environment-related fields such as forestry, biology, animal sciences, veterinary medicine, ecology, environmental science, horticulture, and more.

2024 marks the 35th year that Jackson County Conservation District has offered a scholarship!

The application deadline for 2024 is JULY 5TH.
Application materials are due at our office by this time. They may be submitted electronically.
Fax, mail, and in-person submissions are also welcome.

Only one student will receive this scholarship. A recipient may reapply for the scholarship for up to 4 years while they pursue an undergraduate degree, if they continue to major in an agriculture- or environment-related field, and maintain satisfactory grades. Eligibility requirements are:

  • Applicants must be seniors or graduates of a Jackson County high school;

  • Before receiving payment, applicants must provide official proof of high school graduation;

  • Before receiving payment, applicants must provide official proof of university enrollment and their major(s); and

  • Applicants must complete JCCD's scholarship application (below) and essay.

"Official proof" of graduation or enrollment would be verifiable forms/letters from a school's administration or registrar. We do follow up with the school to verify this information.

The essay must be typed, and must only be 500 words (or more) about the applicant’s chosen major, and how they hope to use their education to contribute to conservation and/or agriculture. Electronic submissions are preferred but not required. Stapling is not necessary.

Applications and downloadable/printable essay guidelines are below. Alternatively, they may be requested by email or phone (606-287-4284), mailed to you at no cost, or you may pick them up from our office in the Kentucky Mountain Housing building across from the school bus garage on south 421.

Supporting materials which prove graduation and enrollment may be supplied later, as they become available.
